Creating Micro aesthetics

A photographer has two missions with their photos, from a creative point of view. The first is to make photographs that can stand on their own; they each have a combination of color, subject, and light that create something unique. The second is to put together a series, where each work connects to the next, like the links in a chain.

On this particular walk around in the hills, I made a commitment: to preserve the same color palette on each photo of this series. This is, in my words, a “micro aesthetic”. These green and brown tones I applied to landscapes, with one portrait at the end. The collection of photos is what holds it together.

Creatively, choosing to bring together these images around my own idea is a rejection of “capturing the world in its objective state”. Minimal editing to preserve an environment can be extremely useful. When I first started photography, I edited like this in order to focus on my compositions.

At this stage of my journey, I will make my subjective choices into an integral part of the documentation process. Rather than to reflect the state of nature around me, I give nature the look I desire, and that I want to make into my own photography work.

Deliberately changing a scene to fit my own aesthetic is a radical jump. It will allow me to spread my imagination more, both on the spot and behind computer. I look forward to developing more aesthetics.
