The market scene

The Nyons Thursday market has been running since at least the middle ages. I believe that lockdown was the first time is ceased. It went through Vichy, and liberation (which is celebrated as the August 15th Mediterranean D-Day).

Before I set out to photograph today’s market, I knew I would have to work with mask covered subjects. I suppose this is a new kind of street photography. It makes me realize how much I took for granted the many different expressions that rest on people’s faces, now hidden away.

The market installations (wood tables, coat hangers…) are there to separate the tourists from the vendors. But I found that framing my subject(s) with these other objects gave me a real “pandemic market”. Composition is now about representing that distance that people have to impose on themselves. But by minimizing the importance of the market goers, I can more easily fit in the natural environment (in the foreground, social distancing and all).
