“Photowalks” as the new normal

We live in a time in which our surroundings are closed down. By being outside, we might cause involuntary harm to someone. I believe this has changed our senses as street photographers.

This pandemic has reshaped how I act towards people with my camera. There are conflicting forces. The need for consent (to be photographed) is suppressed by the mask, which makes everyone anonymous. On the other hand, I feel like I get carried away, and shoot freely. The result is a mish mash of uninteresting scenes, with the wrong photography rules applied. Those rules from before the pandemic (ease and control of my subjects) no longer apply.

The silver lining to this fundamental change comes like a trail of bread crumbs. Greater distance between all of us is a fresh opportunity to improve my photography in different ways. Simply put, I can access places which would always have been more crowded, and work on isolating the individual or surface.
